Why We're Moving Away from Kanamycin for This:
While Kanamycin is a good antibiotic, its information for treating specific marine gill infections is sparse. It is less effective as a water-borne treatment in saltwater and is better suited for internal infections when mixed with food. For a targeted gill infection, Nitrofurazone or a food-bound Doxycycline are more reliable and documented choices.
Part 4: The Ultimate Prevention Strategy

The Non-Negotiable Quarantine: A 4-6 week QT for all new fish is the single most effective practice. Use this time to observe and treat for parasites proactively.

1. I treated for flukes, but the breathing is still heavy. What's wrong?
The physical damage to the gills from the flukes can take time to heal. Ensure your QT water is pristine (0 ammonia/nitrite, low nitrate) and well-oxygenated. If symptoms don't improve after several days, a secondary bacterial infection is likely, and you should begin Protocol B.
2. Can this spread to my other fish?
Yes, the primary causes like gill flukes are highly contagious. This is why quarantine of the sick fish and close observation of all others is essential.
3. My fish is in QT but won't eat the medicated food.
